- 1804 marks the first year of independence from French colonialism and the end of slavery for Haiti. Jean-Jacques Dessalines has Saint-Domingue renamed to Haïti.
- Port Républicain is renamed Port-au-Prince by Jean-Jacques Dessalines.
- Fort Dauphin is renamed Fort Liberté.
- Cap Français is renamed Cap Haïtien.

- On January 1 Jean-Jacques Dessalines reads the Act of Independence on the Place d'Armes of Gonaïves. Haiti permanently abolishes slavery and becomes independent from France.
- On January 8 Saint-Jean Louverture the youngest son of Suzanne and Toussaint Louverture dies in French captivity.

- Napoléon Bonaparte has himself crowned Emperor of the French (Empereur des Français) under the name Napoleon I on May 18.

- On July 22 Victor Schoelcher, the abolitionist and biographer of Toussaint Louverture (Vie de Toussaint Louverture - 1889) was born in Paris, France.
October
- Jean-Jacques Dessalines is crowned emperor of Haiti under the name of H.I.M. Jacques I, Emperor of Haiti at the Church of Champ-de-Mars on October 8.
