Arawak is the language spoken by the Taíno, the native inhabitants of Hispaniola (The island now containing Haiti and the Dominican Republic.). Arawak also was used to designate the friendly Amerindians encountered by the Spanish in the Caribbean. These include the Taino, who occupied the Greater Antilles and the Bahamas,
