Diego Colón

Diego Colón Moniz (also: Diego Columbus) (Lisbon, Portugal 1474 - Montálban, Spain February 2, 1526) was the first born son of Christopher Columbus and Filipa Moniz. In 1509 succeeded Nicolas de Ovando as 4th Governor of Hispaniola. From May 1511 to 1518 he held the position of Viceroy of the Indies.

In 1509 Cólon dispatched Juan de Esquivel to take possession the neighboring Caribbean island of Jamaica.

Alcázar De Colon is a large palace built for Diego Colon in 1510. It is located in capital of the Dominican Republic, Santo Domingo and today serves as a museum.
