Description: "Overseer Artayou Carrier whipped me. I was two months in bed sore from the whipping. My master come after I was whipped; he discharged the overseer. The very words of poor Peter, taken as he sat for his picture."
Baton Rouge, La. [U.S.A.], April 2, 1863. [unknown photographer]

Note: While this image is not from Saint-Domingue (The abolition of slavery in the colony happened before the spread of photography), it is nonetheless indicative of treatment of African slaves under European colonialism and the constant torture of slaves in this French colony is well documented.
It was not uncommon for slaves to die after such brutal whippings.
