On October 17, 1806 the Haitian fighter for independence and the ruler Jean-Jacques Dessalines was assassinated at Pont-Rouge (Red Bridge) north of Port-au-Prince.

October 17 is a Haitian holiday to commemorate the death of Haiti's founder.
