Chapter Summary: In Chapter Eight we'll look at British interest in the colony, and their attempt to secure the Jewel of the Antilles for the British Crown. We'll meet Whitelocke who started the British campaign and Maitland, who would eventually surrender to Toussaint. After that, we'll note Toussaint Louverture's consolidation of power and the period of relative peace and prosperity over which he ruled. We'll also examine the difficulties faced in this period by Toussaint as he sought to create a quasi-independent state.
