Chapter Summary: Chapter Ten will see Toussaint resign from the field of battle as Leclerc works to remove the last pockets of resistance. Toussaint's betrayal and exile and the rising cruelty of the French galvanize once more the dormant rebel army, who rise up to defeat the French. General Dessalines declares the colony's independence on January 1, 1804.
