Rev. John Relly Beard's biography of the Haitian fighter for independence and freedom from slavery, Toussaint Louverture.

Beard was a British educational reformer and Unitarian minister. A strong believer in education for the masses, he ran a school of his own and produced several texts that were designed to be widely usable (Latin Made Easy, The People's Biographical Dictionary, more). In all, he wrote more than sixty publications on a variety of subjects. He also translated theological works from French and German into English, influencing British theological thinking in the process.
