Don't know who you are, but I just wanted to thank you for showing up and helping to get the wiki moving along.  It really helps to have more people involved in the project. Hi there, I've done some research over the last few years on a British Captain named John Perkins. Doe, I continue to be blown away by the work you're doing lately. Thank you so much!

Doe - I hope you've found the new place okay.  It took me a while to get the database restored and the redirects working properly.  I also noticed a little too late that you had been making some edits tonight.  I hope we didn't lose any.

I was taking a look at the front page the other day.  I really think it needs to be changed to reflect some of the new material we have onlineI might have some time this weekend to take do an update, but feel free to dive in and muck about with it, if you like. --Stumax 07:53, 14 Dec 2005 (PST)

I'll make a note on this elsewhere, but for your knowledge, I moved the wiki up one directory level, so that now if you go to the root url, you'll be right into the wiki.  I also made it so that you don't need to put in the www before the domain nameWe're also running the newest version of Mediawiki now, and future updates should be much easier.

In addition, I moved the blog to http://journal.thelouvertureproject.org.  At some point, I'll re-structure that to be more of a reference resource and less of a blog-looking thing.

Doe - I've added a spam filter that disallows span tags (can't remember right now if it's all span tags or just certain ones.)  It's really made a difference in the amount of spam hits we get.  I wasn't sure if you use span tags in your posts or not.  If you have any issues, let me know. --Stumax 13:56, 23 February 2006 (PST)

Okay, this is getting ridiculous.  This is one of a couple of wikis I'm involved with that has been getting slammed by spam in the past week or so.  I've got some ideas about how to tackle this, and since you've been the primary contributor to the Louverture Project lately, I wanted to run a couple of things by you.

First, I hate the idea of requiring registration in order to edit a page, but I may have no choice if I can't find a better spam-blocking method, and it will probably provide us some immediate respite from the spam attacks. What do you think about requiring registration?

Secondly, I'd like to restructure the domain so that the wiki shows up at the first level (i.e., so you don't have to add /wiki to the domain name).  The blog was a nice idea, but the wiki is the real focus, and should take the prime position on the domainThe side benefit of that would be that I could then let my hosting service manage the mediawiki installation, making software upgrades easier (and therefore, theoretically, better resistance to spam).  I think I can write the htaccess file so that everything redirects properly, but there may be some issues.  It will certainly mean that the wiki will be unavailable for a time while I'm reconfiguring everything.  Do you have any thoughts on whether this is a good idea or not?  Also, do you have a preference on when this happens?  I'd probably prefer to tackle this over a weekend.

Boy, this has me stumped.  I've sent a message to the mediawiki mailing list.  Hopefully one of those guys will have the answer. Worst case scenario: we have to wait for Google to re-index the wiki pages.  I've got a Google sitemap up now, so hopefully that won't take too long.

I'm really happy with the way the wiki is growing.  Thanks again for all you do.

Maybe a bit of both?  ;-)  Things definitely seem snappier, and the software just keeps improving.  I don't know if you check the RSS feed for recent changes, but I love that I can now see colored diffs when pages change.

Doe, thanks for your responseI spent 3 hours last night deleting over 100 spam pages from another wiki I run, and I see you've been busy doing cleanup here, too.  I tried again to enable the Bad Behavior spam blocker on this wiki.  I'll keep an eye on it today, and if we keep getting hit, I'm going to have to temporarily disallow anonymous edits.

That's the planYou can see how long it takes me to get around to doing stuff here, though, so don't hold your breath. :-)

I will move forward with restructuring the domain folders, probably one of the first weekends in August.  I'll be sure to give plenty of heads up.  --Stuart 09:05, 21 July 2006 (PDT)

That said, I really want to re-design that page a little bit to make finding information easier.  I've got some ideas for how to do that.  I just need another free weekend when I can dig into the template.

I restricted anonymous users from editing and creating pages.  And, I'm requiring users to confirm their email addresses before they can edit.  That should slow them down again... for a while... :-)

More spam fighting

Well, the new version of MediaWiki had the spammers stumped for a while, but they're starting to find the holes again. So, I added a few restrictions to try to keep them at bay. I hate locking the wiki down at all, but I'm getting tired of cleaning up after these guys all the time... and I'm sure you are, too.

I restricted anonymous users from editing and creating pages. And, I'm requiring users to confirm their email addresses before they can edit. That should slow them down again... for a while... :-)
