Bust of Toussaint Louverture at Fort de Joux, France. Below is the inscription (in French) "In overthrowing me, you have cut down in Saint-Domingue only the trunk of the tree of liberty It will spring up again by the roots for they are numerous and deep." 1 Words Toussaint is believed to have said (in 1802) to his French captors as he was being led away to his imprisonment in France.
Note 1: French: "En me renversant, on n'a abattu à Saint-Domingue que le tronc de l'arbre de la liberté des nègres; il repoussera par les racines, parce qu'elles sont profondes et nombreuses."
The Bust was placed in front of Toussaint's dungeon at Fort de Joux in the year 2002.
