From Anacaona the Taíno queen, to the struggle in revolutionary Saint-Domingue and beyond - Haitian women have been instrumental in the fight for liberty and until today Haitians recognize the essential roles that women had in the abolition of slavery and efforts leading to the Declaration of Independence by Jean-Jacques Dessalines in 1804.
