Chapter Summary: Chapter Eleven will look at what Haitian independence meant to the Americas. We'll look at the fearful reaction of the United States as it sought to keep its southern neighbor from becoming an example to American slaves. We'll also look at the spread of emancipation and independence throughout the Caribbean and Latin America, especially Haiti's assistance to Simon Bolivar. Haiti's example and continuing support of oppressed Africans in the New World had a lot to do with its eventual status as pariah state.
