- Toussaint and troops begin fighting for Spain and Governor-General Gilbaud flees the Saint-Domingue civil war with 10,000 white refugees and 100 ships, bound for Baltimore.
August
- On August 29, 1793 French commissioner Léger Félicité Sonthonax issues a decree to abolish slavery in the northern part of Saint-Domingue under his control.
November
- On November 5, 1793 Léger Félicité Sonthonax publishes his Broadside defending his decree to abolish slavery in the colony.
