On January 1, 1904 on the occasion of the, greatly celebrated, 100th anniversary of the Haitian Declaration of independence by Jean-Jacques Dessalines, Haiti adopted the national anthem La Dessalinienne with lyrics by Justin Lhérisson and composed by Nicolas Geffrard.
The anthem honors Jean-Jacques Dessalines.

December

On December 6 U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt delivers an annual message to the U.S.Congress in which he outlays what is later to be called the Roosevelt Corollary to the Monroe Doctrine.
