In 1798 the Quasi-War, a naval conflict between France and the United States, starts. it will end in 1800.

- After the British defeat through Toussaint Louverture's troops, on October 2, 1798 Thomas Maitland ceases to be the Governor-General of Bristish occupied Saint-Domingue, a position he held since March of 1797.
- Thomas Hédouville, the French general sent to the colony as governor after the departure of Sonthonax flees Saint-Domingue on Oct. 22, 1798.
