Photograph of Frederick Douglass, an American abolitionist, editor, orator, author, statesman and reformer.

He was born a slave in Talbot County, Maryland under the name Frederick Augustus Washington Bailey and later became known as Frederick Douglass.
Douglass was the minister-resident and consul-general to the Republic of Haiti (1889-1891).
After two years in Haiti, he resigned his ambassadorship due to disagreements with U.S. government policy.
