This book is often mentioned as one of the best books on Haitian history after it's independence. Trough exhaustive research, it illuminates the complex issues of race and class in post-colonial Haiti. Nicholls looks as how race has both served as an uniting and dividing factor in 200 years of Haitian history.

It was written originally in 1979, but the 1996 issue has been updated to cover later events, such as the military coup against President Jean-Bertrand Aristide in 1991.
