A houngan is a male vodou priest in Haitian Creole. A female vodou priest is called mambo.
Boukman was a houngan. He led the 1791 ceremonies at Bois Caïman with the mambo Cécile Fatiman. This event is often regarded as having delivered the spark not only to the Boukman Rebellion, but also to the Haitian Revolution that led to independence in 1804 after 13 years of fierce fighting.
