Jean Baptiste Villatte (aka Jean Louis Villatte) was second-in-command to Comte de Laveaux. Toussaint Louverture urged Laveaux to find evidence that Villatte committed "corruption on a grand scale and belligerent disloyalty." (Parkinson, p. 100) Villatte, along with André Rigaud and Pierre Pinchinat, engineered Laveaux's capture and imprisonment, though he was released by Toussaint in short order. When Léger Félicité Sonthonax' returned to the post of Commissioner in 1796, Sonthonax had Villatte arrested and deported.
