- In 1796 Léger Félicité Sonthonax, Roume and Julien Raimond who serves as an commissioner alongside Sonthonax, return to Saint-Domingue. (Parkinson, p. 103)
- Rioting erupts against colonial settlers Aux Cayes, killing many.
- Fourneaux and André Rey are sent by Sonthonax to investigate the March mulatto uprising against the French Governor General Comte de Laveaux.
- Biassou arrives in St. Augustine, Florida where he later buys a large plantation and moves on to be a high ranking officer in the Spanish colony.

- The French Governor General Laveaux was seized on March 20 in Le Cap by mulattos under the command of of Jean Baptiste Villatte and thrown in jail for five days before Toussaint Louverture effected his release. (Parkinson, pp. 99-101)

- On May 11 Léger Félicité Sonthonax becomes the French Commissioner in Saint-Domingue, replacing Étienne Maynaud Bizefranc, comte de Laveaux, (This position was also identical with the title Governor General.) Laveaux then leaves the colony.
