During the Revolutionary Period in Saint-Domingue, a person was considered to be white, or blanc, if he had more than 128 white ancestors. In other words, he had no black ancestors in the previous seven generations. Please see the note on the Race page for more on this issue.
Note: In Kreyòl the word blan (lit. white) does not necessary connote skin color, it also means foreigner etc..
In the context of discussing Saint-Domingue white is also often used to mean colonial settler and does not necessarily always primarily refer to the persons skin color.
