  • Jefferson got scared when he saw the whites helping blacks to develop their emancipation. (Blackburn)
  • Adams said of Saint Domingue, "They are necessary to us and we are necessary to them." (Seppinwall)
  • Jefferson served as Secretary of State from 1791 - 1793 and dissuaded Washington from supporting the revolution in Saint Domingue, though it would have been advantageous to nascent American trade. However, after Jefferson's resignation, Washington had a change of heart and was more receptive to pleas of help from the colony.
