Ebenezer Don Carlos Bassett (Litchfield, Connecticut Oct. 16, 1833 - Nov. 15, 1908) was appointed US Minister to Haiti in 1869, this made him the first African American diplomat. Bassett served as minister resident and consul general in Haiti from 1869 to 1877. Ebenezer Bassett was of also of Pequot Indian ancestry.
