Thomas Clarkson (1760 Wisbech - 1846) a British abolitionist who encouraged the Amis des Noirs and supplied the society with propaganda that had been used in Britain. (James, p. 54) He also financed weapons purchases by the Haitian mulatto leader Vincent Ogé used for his crushed revolt in 1790.

Clarkson was a prominent member of several abolitionist groups:

  • The Committee for the Abolition of the Slave Trade (later renamed, the Society for the Abolition of the Slave Trade (Founded 1787).
  • The Society for the Mitigation and Gradual Abolition of Slavery throughout the British Dominions (Founded 1807).
  • The British and Foreign Anti-Slavery Society (Founded 1839).
